Garland R Johnson
Assistant Professor Johnson was born on August 12, 1956 in Lufkin, Texas of Irish and French ancestry. He began his martial arts career in 1974 when he began studying Kempo at the Lowry Recreational Center in Texas City, Texas. By way of the United States Navy, Assistant Professor Johnson went on a 7 year quest in search of the best in the martial arts starting in Okinawa. He studied the martial arts in 10 countries on 3 continents in search of the best. He found the best with Professor Buell there in Hawaii. Assistant Professor Johnson has since been a student of Professor Martin T. Buell training in Hawaii at the Wahiawa, Pacific Palisades, and Highlands Branches of Universal Kempo-Karate Schools Association.
He received his Black Belt under Professor Buell in 1980. In June of 2005, Professor Buell promoted seven persons to the rank of 8th Degree and Assistant Professor. Those individuals were Brian Tokushima, Chris Ragone, Eric Guiang, Jesse Manegdeg, PeterPaul Abiva, Robyn Kimura, and Garland Johnson. Assistant Professor Johnson opened the United States Air Force Academy branch of Universal Kempo-Karate Schools on September 17, 1980. The Universal Team in Colorado Springs has grown from that one location at the USAFA Youth Center (which is still in operation today) to the 28 Branches of Universal Kempo-Karate Schools Association that blanket the local area known as the Pikes Peak Region.
For over 20 years Assistant Professor Johnson has proven to be a fierce open martial arts tournament competitor winning countless state, regional, national and international championships. He has trained many of the most successful martial arts competitors.

The Universal Kempo-Karate Schools in Colorado Springs are recognized as being one of the finest martial arts organizations not only in the teaching of the martial arts, but also in business. Assistant Professor Johnson is a Senior Board Member of Educational Funding Company and as such is chartered with helping other martial arts school owners throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom reach the same levels of success that the JohnsonÆs enjoy.
Assistant Professor Johnson is the co-founder of the Colorado Karate Association (CKA) and United Martial Arts Professionals for Integrity, Responsibility and Ethics (U.M.P.I.R.E.). Assistant Professor JohnsonÆs greatest fulfillment with the martial arts is enjoying teaching and helping a student who really needs help. He is devoted to the well being and education in assisting students of the martial arts to become effective leaders in society. Assistant Professor JohnsonÆs areas of expertise are in Adult and WomenÆs Personal Protection, Child Health, Safety & Fitness, Bully Proofing, and Developing The Future Leaders Of Tomorrow.
